You often hear stories of the fish that got away,

But this time our story is about a fish that stayed.

Steve was faithfully at the lake, day or night.

Being there with the fish was pure delight.

In the mornings he’d stay close to shore,

With diligence he’d stay till the shade was no more.

It was peaceful, calm, and cool there,

And Steve would show off with impressive flair.

Moving around the shore, he would see others,

Including his dad, a few sisters, and a couple of brothers.

Sometimes the others stayed, but never as long as Steve,

Quite honestly, he never wanted to leave.

But his job took him out further in the lake,

Heading out to deep water was no mistake.

For years he knew deep water meant more fish,

Which was important to Steve, to fulfill his wish.

The more fish he’d find, the happier he was,

It was there he met his first true love.

Sally was a beauty with brains and style,

Steve was hooked like a fish for a little while.

Sally was fast, care-free, and a bit wilder than Steve,

Never staying long in one place, was his only pet peeve.

One day she was gone, Steve never saw her again,

Caught up in foolishness with some of her old school friends.

Steve never saw her again; he was a bit broken-hearted.

His very first love had clearly departed.

He would still return to that part of the lake every day,

Wishing that Sally would have chosen to stay.

For years, the lake was all Steve could think about.

He’d talk about the bass, the perch, and the rainbow trout.

Steve was getting older, but that never slowed him down,

He was happy with his life and never wore a frown.

Although his life had limitations, he found plenty to do,

And lived out his life till he was one-hundred-and-two.

Steve had decided to quit chasing fish all over the lake,

He had had enough for goodness’ sake.

The lake was the place many battles were fought,

But Steve remained the fish that never got caught.
